“rain check” は、「また今度にしよう」という意味で、今は難しいけれど後でしたいという気持ちを込めて、約束や誘いを丁寧に延期する時に使う表現です。

19世紀のアメリカで、雨によって野球の試合が中止になった際に観客へ配られていた「雨天振替券（rain check）」が語源になっています。

そのため、単なる断りではなく、
「本当は行きたいけど今は無理だから、次はぜひ！」
という前向きで優しいニュアンスを持っています。

例えば、友達に夕食へ誘われたけれど忙しい時には、

“I’ll take a rain check!”

（また今度にするね！）
